Meeting 1: Building Knowledge of the Field
Introduction (10 min)
- Teacher reads aloud a short fairy tale with expression. Students predict what happens next at key moments.
Main Activities (60 min)
- Students read "Malin Kundang" (adapted) and "Cinderella" — compare the two texts using a Venn diagram.
- Identify: Who are the characters? What is the problem? How is it resolved? What is the moral?
- Language focus: Find all the past tense verbs. How does the author make the story vivid? (Descriptive adjectives, dialogue, onomatopoeia)
- Generic structure analysis: label each paragraph as Orientation / Complication / Resolution / Re-orientation.
Meeting 2: Modelling the Text
Main Activities (70 min)
- Teacher deconstructs a model narrative text sentence by sentence — focus on tense consistency, connectives (suddenly, then, finally, in the end), and character development.
- Joint construction: class writes a narrative together (teacher scribes) based on a given story skeleton.
- Students take the skeleton home and expand it individually as homework.
Meeting 3: Independent Writing & Peer Feedback
Main Activities (70 min)
- Students write their own narrative: retell an Indonesian folktale in English, OR create an original story set in Indonesia.
- Peer feedback using checklist: structure, past tense, connectives, descriptive language, moral message.
- Revise and finalize the text. Best stories shared with the class.
Assessment
Formative: Structure identification worksheet, participation in joint construction.
Summative: Written narrative (150–200 words), scored on: content & structure (30%), language accuracy (30%), creativity (20%), moral message (20%).
